I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8 :38-39 NLT)
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:28 NIV)
God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5 NIV)
Yesterday we saw that loneliness is experienced when we do not have emotionally intimate or meaningful relationships with others. I often refer to this as internal loneliness, but many people also experience physical loneliness, which can be just as debilitating.
The fear of being alone is a big concern for many people. Some people worry about growing old alone. Children (and some adults) have a fear of being alone at night in the dark. Others are afraid of being unwell and alone; never marrying, or losing a loved one and simply having to live alone.
At the age of nine, I had to spend time in hospital alone following a road traffic accident when my parents were away. I remember the feelings of complete aloneness that I felt back then, spending the night in a strange bed, being attended to by doctors and nurses I had never seen before, not really understanding what was happening. Yet I also remember knowing that God was with me. More recently, I had to have a small surgery, and once again I found myself feeling alone and vulnerable in the hospital, as I was left on a bed in a hallway for what felt like an eternity, separated from all my personal effects and loved ones. Staff hurried past, other patients were brought in, but nobody spoke or really acknowledged me for a while. Despite being a strong prayer ‘warrior’, I felt that day as if my prayers were going nowhere, perhaps because of the busy and at times disconcerting atmosphere, but I remembered God’s promise, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” As if in confirmation, a lovely lady from the radiology department came over to me to bring my slates for surgery. She put her arm around me and whispered, “Even though you don’t feel as if you are in control, remember that God is, and He’s with you!” In that moment, I was so encouraged, and I knew that he really was there with me, even providing that warm hug from a stranger!
I know a lady who has a fear of dying alone. One day she was thinking about how when babies are born, they are received into the world with great love and celebration. Warm, caring hands immediately take the baby to cuddle it and place it into its mother or fathers waiting arms. She pondered the fact that at birth there is someone waiting there to bring us into the unknown world, to love, nurture and protect us, but what about when we leave the world? She asked, “Who will be there at the moment of my death? What if nobody is there and I am alone?” This was one of her greatest anxieties. But within moments she felt God’s answer. “I will be there. You won’t be alone. My loving arms will be waiting and ready to receive you, as they always have been. I am with you always.”
God’s loving arms are always there for us. Between birth and death this doesn’t change. He is there in the dark with the small child. He is there in the hospital with the patient on the bed in the hallway. He is there when we lose a loved one. He is there in the empty apartment or the lonely bedroom. All your life, he has been with you, watching over you, longing for you to know he is there.
He has promised that absolutely nothing can separate you from him or his love. Not sickness, or pain, or death or darkness. Nothing. Not even sin. Sometimes we fear being alone as a result of guilt and sin, but this no longer applies because of Jesus. Longing for reconciliation with us, God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for sin for us. Jesus was condemned and rejected so that we don’t have to be. He was abandoned by God on the cross to the point where he cried ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46). Because he paid the penalty for sin instead of us, we never have to be abandoned, alone or separated from God again. Ever. You have been bought by the blood of Christ. He does not condemn you, and will not leave you.
One of my favourite worship songs is “In Christ Alone,” by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty. It is a song about the hope we have in Jesus because of his death on the cross. It describes how Christians do not need to live in fear as a result of sin, because our destiny, and indeed our whole life from birth to death is in God’s hands. No matter what life throws at us, or what other people do to us, nothing can snatch us out of God’s hands. Isn’t that wonderful? That is the truth!
Here are some of the lyrics:
And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine - Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath. Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.
Prayer: Father God, thank you that you are with me always. You have watched over me from the moment of my birth, and my destiny is in your hands. Thank you that I am never alone because I belong to you, and you have promised that nothing can separate me from your love. Show me how to pray when I feel lonely, and help me to turn to you and know the reality of your Presence during those moments. Amen.

Turn to me and be gracious to me,
for I am lonely and afflicted. (Psalm 25:16 NIV)
It is not good for the man to be alone. (Genesis 2:18 NIV)
Over
the past few days we have seen how God, who created the universe and
everything in it, is personally interested in his creation, longing for
us to find him and know just how great his love is. Today we turn our
attention to one of the world's most common problems which prevents
many people from believing that they are loved. That problem is
loneliness.
Loneliness
is said to be one of the biggest diseases of our time. Despite all our
communication technology, 24/7 lifestyles, increasing population, self
awareness skills and resources, the biggest struggle many people face
today is the feeling of being alone or not belonging.
Mother
Teresa, who spent her life caring for the sick and destitute, said many
times that the feeling of being unwanted, or being a ‘nobody to
anybody’ is a much greater hunger than physical hunger. She recognized that the needs of the soul are much greater than the needs of the body.
Solitude is often confused with loneliness, but the two are quite different. Solitude is simply the state of being alone, which can often be a positive experience. Introverts, and highly sensitive people for example, need alone time to recharge, and often thrive in their own company. However, when solitude is forced upon us, through illness or through the death of a partner for example, loneliness can result.
We
experience loneliness when we do not have emotionally intimate or
meaningful relationships with others, which can cause us to feel
isolated or unimportant. I have counselled many people
who have told me that they feel lonely within their marriage or even
among a group of friends or in a church. Lack of
emotional intimacy or effective communication causes them to feel that
they are not valued, or accepted for who they are. The feeling of not belonging or not mattering is incredibly painful. To
feel that nobody cares for you cripples the soul because we were
designed by God for close loving relationships. At the dawn of
creation when God formed man, he looked upon him and declared, "It is
not good for the man to be alone." Isolation and loneliness were never
part of God's plan for mankind. He designed us to be in relationship
with both himself and other people. I believe that when one or the
other is lacking, life cannot be as fulfilling as God intended. To be
dependent on other people for feelings of love and value, without also
depending on the God who created you and knows you, means you are
depending on an often unreliable source of love! To be dependent on God
without relationships with others means we miss the opportunity to grow
in relationship, bless others and be blessed through sharing our life
journey together.
In
the counselling room clients often tell me that they feel that nobody
has time to listen to them or care for them anymore, because everyone
is so busy, especially here in our western culture. Many people are struggling with deep internal loneliness, longing for their hearts to be heard and valued.
I have always loved listening
to people. I love to listen to each person’s story: their needs, their
fears, their hopes and dreams, even their disappointments and failures.
I love to do this because I believe each and every person is valuable
and unique. Each and every person matters because they are extremely precious. Every person’s heart is different. Each one is vulnerable, but also beautiful, holding within it tremendous potential because each one has been individually crafted by the Creator whom it reflects. Everyone
matters regardless of their sins or struggles. I believe that the
hearts of the homeless substance abusers and prostitutes are as
precious and worth listening to as the heart of the saints. If a flawed human such as myself feels this way, how much more does God our heavenly Father feel this way!
He
longs for you to know that he delights to listen to you to. He longs
for you to know that each of your fears, failures, hopes and needs
matters to him more than you will ever know. He longs for you to know that you are not alone even though you may live alone, or live in a
relationship where your heart is not heard, or your needs not met.
Perhaps you are in a marriage where your husband or wife no longer
listens to or respects your heart. Perhaps you are the one in your
group of friends or workmates who is considered the odd one out, the
one who is different, whose gifts and talents are different to what the
world considers the norm. Perhaps you are the one at school who spends recess alone because you don’t fit in in some way. Let me tell you that you are not alone. You are loved and cared about by the most high God, your heavenly Father who is longing to listen to you, yearning to speak to you, and deeply desiring meaningful relationship with you.
Below is a link to Josh Groban’s popular song “You are Loved.” I
first heard this song on the radio a couple of years ago at a time when
I was feeling that I didn't fit in or belong in my adopted country,
and as a result I was experiencing a degree of loneliness. Through the
words of the song God reminded me that I am loved and infinitely
special. I pray that he will do the same for you today as you listen, and that you will know that these are his words to you too.
Prayer:
My Father in heaven, thank you that you hear my heart and value me more
than I can know. Thank you that my hopes, dreams, fears and failures
matter to you. Thank you that where there is love, there cannot be
loneliness. Help me to know your love and your Presence with me always,
Amen.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. (Psalm 19: 1-4 NIV)
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. (Psalm 8:1 NIV)
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8: 3-4 NIV)
We are going to spend one more day focusing on what the natural world shows us about God. Yesterday,
we saw that God is a very powerful being who deliberately planned and
formed the universe. Today, we are going to lift our gaze from the
Earth to look up at that incredible universe! It is perhaps here that
we get the deepest sense of the greatness and glory of God.
I recently watched a DVD called Indescribable, presented by author and speaker Louie Giglio. Throughout
the presentation, Louie emphasizes the importance of “right sizing”
God, as he takes the viewer on a visual journey through the known
universe, showing off some of its greatest wonders and dazzling cosmic
displays. Louie suggests that if the primary purpose of the universe is
just to be a home for us, then it is vastly oversized, and that perhaps
its true purpose is in fact to show off the splendour and majesty of
the God who created it! This declaration continues day after day, and
night after night pouring forth “knowledge” of God, in a way that can
be understood in every language upon the earth!
Stop
and consider some cosmic data for a moment. Let’s consider the “work of
his fingers” as the psalmist suggested! Think about the power of the
sun. The sun is 100 times the diameter of the Earth, with raging heat
of around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit! Scientists believe it would take 7 million years of the Earth’s power to run the sun for just one second! What
does this tell us about its Creator? His power is like nothing on
earth! It is off the scale, outweighing anything on our planet! Nothing
can compete with His energy and force! Not even all the power in the
world! This should leave us in no doubt about His power and might!
Not
only is He supremely powerful, but He is also personally interested in
His creation. Our own Milky Way galaxy contains billions of stars (and
is just one of billions of other galaxies!) According to Louie
Giglio, to count the stars of the Milky Way at a rate of one per
second, would take us 2500 years! Yet the Bible says that God knows and
calls each one by name.
“He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.” (Psalm 147: 4 NIV)
"Lift
your eyes and look to the heavens:Who created all these? He who brings
out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of
his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing."
(Isaiah 40:26 NIV)
Not only that, but new stars are being born every second, and still He knows and names each one. To name something demonstrates personal interest and care. To be named is to belong to someone or something.
Not only does God know and name each new star, but He knows each one of us by name too. He knew your name before you were born, and has been watching over you ever since! He is personally interested in you. You belong to Him.
We
saw yesterday that it is hard for us to comprehend how such a mighty
God who can hold the universe in His hand, can at the same time be
interested in us, especially when we realize how tiny we are in
comparison. However, God is big! If He is able to oversee and care for
billions and billions of stars at once, then He can also care for
billions and billions of people, right down to you and me! Though we are indeed tiny, we should never believe that we are of little consequence in God’s vast and complex universe. Why? Because
God has shown us that we are in fact more important to Him than
anything else in creation. How? He chose to set aside His glory, power
and majesty, and in the person of Jesus Christ, His Son, to come down
to our tiny blue world, which is but a speck of dust in a huge
universe. He chose to humble Himself and stoop to our level and become
a working class man living alongside us for a while, so that we might
know Him, see Him, understand him, and know that He also understands us
with all our struggles and fears. Not only that, but in order to buy us
new life, to give us a second chance at life, he chose to die on a
cross and take the punishment that should have been ours, so that we
can live forever with Him in a big and incredible story. History is
simply His-story, the one He wrote for you.
What
does this say about you? You are loved and valued more than you can
ever imagine. The King and Creator of the universe wants you to be part
of His never ending story. He loves you and wants you to find Him! He
has left you clues all over the earth and the heavens which
speak of his power and His love for you, and His plan to give you new
life which is echoed in every new season, and every new day. His love
for you is simply immeasurable and indescribable. It’s as big as the
universe itself.
Prayer: Father
God, I am overwhelmed at your greatness. I am amazed that just as you
know and name each star in the heavens, you know my name too. I am
humbled that you chose to come to our world to live and die as one of
us. Help me to truly understand and appreciate the
sacrifice you made for me, and to fully understand the depths of your
indescribable love for me. Amen.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1 NLT)
"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me, if you know so much." (Job 38:4 NLT)
"Can you direct the movement of the stars-
binding the cluster of the Pleiades
or loosening the cords of Orion?
Can you direct the sequence of the seasons
or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens?
Do you know the laws of the universe?
Can you use them to regulate the earth?
"Can you shout to the clouds
and make it rain?
Can you make lightning appear
and cause it to strike as you direct?" (Job 38:31-35 NLT)
We saw yesterday that many people
find it difficult to see any evidence of God or his love or goodness in
today's world. Generally, it seems that belief about God falls into
two broad categories. In the first view, many people seem to believe
that if God exists, he is a divine force or energy that is part of the
universe - part of the created order, rather than the actual Creator.
Like the Force in the Star Wars films, God is seen as being an energy
or power that binds us together and links us with the universe, somehow
improving the quality and direction of our life if we are aligned with
it. Some people see him as Mother Earth or Mother Nature, assigning
human or divine characteristics to part of the created order. Whilst it
is true that God's qualities and character can be seen in nature, the
Bible tells us that we are not to worship nature itself. God is so
much bigger than his creation!
In the opening words of the Bible,
we learn that God was present before the universe was created. Life
began with God. Rather than being part of the created order, he was
the One who started it all. He existed before there was anything
else. Scientists who believe in the 'big bang' theory are always at a
loss to explain what it was (or Who it was!) that initiated the massive
explosion that they believe originally caused the universe to form.
They say that there had to be something that started the process in the
first place. The answer is in Genesis 1 :1 ! "In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth.." (italics mine). At God's command,
the universe was formed. He is outside of time and space; eternal and
infinite. He cannot be limited to the boundaries that bind us here on
earth, or even the confines of the universe itself. To see him as just
a part of creation rather than the One who created all things, robs him
of his true identity, making him appear much smaller than he is.
The second view seems to be that
although God may be the Creator who designed and planned the universe,
he is somehow unwilling or unable to intervene in our lives here on
earth. This view may exist because of the suffering and tragedy that
we see in the world on a daily basis, suggesting that we are left alone
to find meaning, direction and help. If God is unable to intervene,
his power must be limited. No wonder then, that tragedy occurs so
often! If he is unwilling to intervene or show himself, we can only
conclude that he must be an impersonal god who is uninterested in us as
individuals, which gives us little sense of worth or value. By seeing
God as impersonal, with no real interest in his creation, we are once
again reducing God to something he is not. To believe that God created
the universe, but has limited power with which to intervene is also
conflicting. The work of God's hands is incredibly powerful! Man has
yet to tame or even fully understand the natural world! Can we direct
the movement of the stars, or control the seasons? We cannot do that
any more than we can cause rain or lightning to come on demand, as we
see in the scriptures from the book of Job. The God who has the power
to form stars and planets, surely has the power to intervene at any
time in the lives of his creation! The Bible is full of examples of
when he did just that, and I know many Christians today who will say
the same!
Why do we find it hard to believe
or accept that God is so much bigger than we can think or imagine? Do
you find it hard? How do you see him? Are we perhaps afraid that a
Being so great and mighty as God could not possibly be interested in
us, when we appear so small and insignificent in comparison? The truth
is the exact opposite, as we shall see tomorrow! It is only as we see
who God really is, that we can know who we really are, and understand
his plan and purpose for our lives. By having a faulty view of God, we
can have a faulty view of ourselves too.
Life began with God. Nature shows
us that there is a consistent, organized and intelligent plan at work
in creation. God the Creator is the starting point for all meaning and
purpose as we seek to understand ourselves and the world around us.
Prayer: Father God, forgive me
if I have had a small view of you and failed to see you as you really
are. Please correct my vision of you so that I may know not only who
you are, but who I am too. Amen.

For ever since the world
was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything
God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities - his eternal
power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
(Romans 1:10 NLT)
One of the joys of living in
beautiful British Columbia is that there are many wonderful places to
hike, which is something our family likes to do. One golden afternoon
in the autumn when our children were smaller, we were hiking through a
forest around a lake, when we noticed that some of the leaves that had
fallen from the trees were heart shaped. We later found a rock in the
shape of a heart too, and discovered that the more we looked, the more
heart shaped things we found. Our children exclaimed excitedly that
God had left hearts everywhere for them, like clues.
"That's because he loves you," I
told them, as they set off in search of more clues to confirm to their
young hearts the treasure they had already discovered: that God loves
them with an immeasurable and unconditional love.
Life is simple to a child, and it
is often easier for them to embrace the truth of God's love than it is
for adults. By the time we reach adulthood we have learned that the
world is not the good, safe place we thought it was. Many people find
it hard to see any evidence of God in a world full of pain, injustice
and brokenness.
God did not intend for it to be
hard to find him. He has chosen many ways to reveal himself. One of
the simplest, most universal ways is through nature. This is why the
Bible says that from the beginning of creation mankind has been able to
see God's power and personality through the natural world. Nature
speaks a language we can all understand. It has no barriers. It
appeals to all five of our senses. Who is not touched by the sight of
a sunrise, or the sound of a rushing waterfall? Who is not delighted
by the fragrance of summer lilies, or the softness of a butterfly
wing? Who does not enjoy the sweet taste of summer fruit? Who is not
amazed at the intricate details of a tiny snowflake of which no two are
the same? Who is not impressed by the invisible touch of the wind on
their cheek on a stormy day? From the beginning of time, men have
gazed at the moon and the mountains, stars and sunsets, volcanoes and
valleys, and wondered at the complexity and power these display.
As any parent will know, children
delight in the natural world. They will spend hours watching a
ladybird climb onto a leaf, and embrace its world as their own. They
see beauty in flowers that adults call weeds, placing them carefully in
a vase hoping they will live another day to fill them with pleasure all
over again. Untainted by adult thinking, they can still clearly see
the clues their Heavenly Father has left them to teach them something
of Him. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why the Bible says that we
all need to become like little children to embrace his Kingdom (Matthew
18:3)
Today, no matter where you are in
the world, or whatever the season in your country, stop for a moment
and take a look at the world around you. Why not look up at the stars,
gaze at the ocean, or listen to the wind? Which aspect of the natural
world speaks to you most? What does it tell you about God? What other
clues are there in the natural world around you today that reveal
something of God to you?
Prayer: Father God, thank
you that one of the ways you have chosen to reveal yourself is through
nature. Though my day is busy, please help me to stop and ponder this
simple truth. Open my eyes to see you in and through the beauty of the
natural world. Amen.
